BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU) – Elementary students at Benton Harbor Area Schools are trading in their pencils for pots and pans as the district pairs its March reading celebration with the culinary arts.
This week, students read “Mei Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles” and welcomed professional guest Chef Corey Freedman to prepare the dish featured in the book.
The event transformed the school cafeteria into an immersive learning space, giving students a hands-on introduction to other cultures through food.
“Today we are giving an experience to the kids,” Freedman said. “Our chef counsel takes a trip every year to an international country. Last year we went to China for 10 days, this is a recipe that I created from our trip to China, so we like to give the kids an experience and have them make their own authentic experience, let them taste some different things, so that’s what we’re doing today.”
Benton Harbor Area Schools will continue to celebrate the month of reading throughout the rest of March.
